Audience Research: Audience Profile

Chosen Brief

I have chosen to do the magazine brief because I believe I can produce my best quality work in this brief. From my previous work of making mini music videos, I developed an understanding that I am not as good at editing videos and making them look professional as I am for magazines. I think that my photography skills are much stronger than my videography skills and I believe my previous work proves this.

Inspiration: Existing Magazine Covers

 

These are some magazine covers that I really liked certain elements of. Each cover stands out to me in a different way: mise-en-scene, direct address, feature of instrument, colour palette. I am going to try to draw inspiration from a few elements seen in these covers - at the moment, I particularly like the idea of using a natural background (as seen in the top right covers) as well as a full body shot of my model (like the Rina Sawayama cover on the bottom row).

Inspiration: Past Student’s Work

These are some final pieces produced by previous students. In these pieces I really like the use of colours, the natural backgrounds, and the direct address. I plan to implement some of these elements into my own work.

Previous Work: Big Issue Front Cover

 

This is my attempt at creating my own Big Issue front cover. Making this cover allowed me to think about how to convey the brand identity of the Big Issue and also apply the codes and conventions of magazines (such as a barcode, dateline etc). I also practised incorporating intertextuality into this piece (which I achieved through referencing America Ferrera’s speech in the Barbie movie). This was also my first time properly using photoshop to create something, so whilst making this cover I learnt some valuable photoshop skills that I will apply to creating my work for my NEA.
